A digital publication, that meets accessibility requirements
We implemented the visual design and layout of the Agenda to Action 2025 – a digital report for the City of Helsinki in three different languages: Finnish, Swedish and English. The report serves as a communication tool for both decision-makers and city residents, and therefore its accessibility, clarity and visual integrity were key design starting points.
The layout of the report was designed in accordance with the City of Helsinki’s graphic guidelines. The goal was to maintain recognizability in previous publications, while at the same time bringing clarity and modernity to the presentation. The design process started by familiarizing ourselves with reports from previous years, so that we could maintain content and visual continuity. We created the layout template for the report and designed the structure of the report so that it would be easily approachable and visually pleasing to read.
The accessibility of the publication was a key part of the design. We ensured that the report met the WCAG criteria: we paid attention to contrasts, font sizes, text clarity, and alternative texts for images and diagrams. Tables and graphs were also formatted in an accessible way so that the content would be understandable to all users. We used images from the client’s image bank as illustration material, which we processed to achieve a uniform visual appearance.
Smooth collaboration behind the digital publication
The work included the entire digital publication process: visual design, implementation of the accessible version with its language versions, content coordination with the client, and production of publication-ready files. In addition, we implemented internal links to the content and web guides providing additional information, which support the reader’s deeper familiarization with the themes of the report.
Our collaboration with the experts of the City of Helsinki received a lot of praise from the city’s project team and the implementation went smoothly. The finished publication perfectly matched the city’s visual identity and met both communication and accessibility goals. The project demonstrated how a digital publication can combine clear communication, visual quality and technical accessibility into an impressive whole.
